2026 CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

Incorporated in 1997, The Saskatchewan Wheelchair Sports Association is the leading Provincial Organization for developing athletes and for encouraging individuals to achieve personal excellence through adaptive sports. We provide and promote athlete development and excellence, healthy lifestyles, and lifetime sport activities for individuals with mobility impairment.

We are seeking nominations for our Board of Directors. The purpose of the volunteer Board is to advise, govern, oversee policy and direction, and assist with the leadership and general promotion of SWSA to support the Association’s mission and needs.

The SWSA Board is made up nine (9) Directors serving alternating three-year terms. To fulfill the mandate of the Board, various expertise and experience is necessary which may include, for example, not-for-profit governance, strategic planning, policy development, human resources, financial literacy, legal, risk management, fund raising, marketing and communication, and business management.

In addition to bringing a diversity of skills required by the organization, ideal candidates will represent the diversity of our province including age, gender, geographical location, disability, and an understanding of board governance and the Provincial Sports System.

The following Director positions are open for nomination:

  • Three Director positions – each for a 3-year term

Eligibility:
An Individual aged 18 or older, a Canadian resident, legally able to contract, not declared incapable by a court, and not bankrupt, are eligible for nomination as a director. If the nomination is successful, membership in SWSA will be required.

Review of Nominations:
Candidates will be considered based on their demonstrated ability to contribute to the leadership of the Saskatchewan Wheelchair Sports Association, as well as an ability to fulfill their statutory fiduciary responsibilities.

The Nominations Committee of the Board will make a preliminary assessment of each potential candidate based on their experience as outlined in the completed Nominations Form and the resume provided. Those who appear best suited to meet the needs of the Saskatchewan Wheelchair Sports Association will be invited by the Nominations Committee to place their name on the slate of candidates to be presented at SWSA’s Annual General Meeting in September.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE SWSA BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The following outlines basic responsibilities of the Board of Directors that will be helpful for those considering serving as a Director on the Board of the SWSA.

Reporting Relationships
The Board reports to the membership and to Sask Sport as appropriate. The Board delegates management and operational responsibility to the Executive Director.

Major Responsibilities
Each member is expected to make recommendations based on his or her experience and vantage point in the community. Members of the Board share the following responsibilities while acting in the best interests of SWSA:

  • Organizational leadership, strategic planning, and advisement
  • Review effectiveness of the Board, Officers, and Committees
  • Formulate and oversee the policies and procedures including risk management
  • Financial management, including adoption and overseeing the annual budget
  • Overseeing and evaluation of organizational and program planning
  • Executive Director evaluation and staff development
  • Review of organizational and program reports
  • Promotion of SWSA
  • Fundraising and outreach

Meetings and Time Commitment
The Board meets, at the call of the Chair, on a mutually agreed to date and time, as well as at the time of the Annual General Meeting (AGM). Meetings, held via an online platform or by videoconference, typically last 90 minutes. Board members are expected to prepare for, and fully participate in, all meetings. Board members may be asked to attend special events or partner meetings as required, as well as serve on a Board Committee as necessary.

Expectations of Board Members

  • Uphold the legal duties and laws regarding nonprofit governance (due diligence)
  • Be alert to community concerns that can be addressed by SWSA’ mission, objectives, and programs
  • Help communicate and promote SWSA’s mission and programs to the community
  • Become familiar with SWSA’s finances, budget, and financial / resource needs
  • Understand and abide by SWSA’s Code of Conduct, Conflict of Interest, Safe Sport Policy, and other Board policies
  • Maintain confidentiality about all internal matters of the organization
